The hybrid cloud architecture also pulls in elements from EMC-owned VMware and Pivotal, which are grouped together under the EMC Federation banner.

The EMC Hybrid Cloud platform is designed to help customers quickly build a private cloud that can integrate with public clouds. The reference architecture products include EMC storage and data protection, Pivotal Cloud Foundry's platform as a service and Big Data Suite, VMware cloud management and virtualization, and VMware vCloud Hybrid Service. The vCloud Hybrid Service only supports VMware today; OpenStack and Microsoft will be supported in the future.
In other words, the cloud may be hybrid, but the underlying technologies are solely EMC's. EMC is using this as an example of how its federated companies can work together.
"These are things we would pull together if we were one integrated company," Jeremy Burton, EMC president of products and marketing, said of the EMC, VMware and Pivotal collaboration.
The hybrid cloud architecture is light on specifics and probably will require fleshing out in the coming months. In that way, the hybrid cloud project is similar to the ViPR software-defined storage announcement at EMC World last year, said Ashish Nadkarni, an IDC research director for storage.
"First, they put out the vision, then [they] worry about the implementation details," Nadkarni said. "They're arranging and re-arranging the blocks they have, and they will fill in the holes through acquisitions or organic development."
The public cloud SaaS offering is called EMC Supplier Exchange, and uses Pivotal Cloud Foundry. EMC Supplier Exchange was designed for the energy and engineering industry, incorporating the EMC Documentum for Engineering, Plant and Facilities Management suite.
EMC added Syncplicity Connector for SharePoint, enabling business users to access and edit SharePoint files using a Syncplicity app on their mobile device.
