Archiving in the cloud is a viable data storage option for both small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and larger, enterprise-size companies. The pay-as-you-go, or grow, option and the elasticity of cloud offerings is considered ideal for companies that can't predict at the outset the size of their data archive needs. Cloud archiving is also a long-term solution because the cloud provider a company contracts with is the one responsible for migrating data and swapping and replacing hardware in the cloud. Those tasks are taken care of behind the scenes, so customers often have no idea they're even going on. Lastly, because archiving isn't a critical part of a company's IT infrastructure, it's a task that can be placed off-site while the focus on-site remains on production appliances and applications.
Of course, just because data archiving in the cloud is a potential strong solution for companies doesn't mean they can simply switch to the cloud without considering all their options and asking lots of questions.

Just as importantly, companies facing the likelihood of e-discovery requests and numerous HIPAA laws need to ensure data is easily accessible.
